Aughinish Alumina (AAL) is one of the 4 demonstration sites involved with the Cogniplant project. The plant is located in Askeaton, Co. Limerick on Irelands west coast, and has been extracting alumina from bauxite ore for the past 40 years using the well established Bayer process. The finished alumina product is then exported for further processing through smelting to form aluminium metal.
The plant operates at high temperature using gas at the main fuel source to generate steam.
The Cogniplant project will focus on optimising energy efficiency onsite through the installation of additional sensors which will enhance heat exchanger performance and allow them to be modelled and optimised online.
